We are under construction to update the site and add videos. Please be patient. Our goal is to help you learn the basics and manage pandemic cooking. My daughter wants me to do TikTok, that is why we are making changes.

We are not like other food sites. Our goal is to start with the want-a-be cook and help them move through the startup stages of cooking and onto the intermediate stage. I have been told that some of the content is very interesting to even Foodies (those that take cooking seriously). Sharing our ideas about tools, techniques, strategies and kids in the kitchen are the topics we will discuss.

Our goal is to start with a main ingredient….

Salmon Fillet

and help you move through any recipe to end up with a meal.

Tools

Helping to understand whether you need a $500 block of knives

Or can get everything you want done with these, for less than $25! Answer is, doesn’t matter if you have a good knife sharpener on hand.

Techniques

We will show you what has worked for us when dealing with various ingredients including the onion. Dice an onion in under a minute and store it in your fridge without everything smelling like onions!

Strategies

Our family is like most families, we all have 10 to 12 core recipes that I know everyone in the house likes and I know the ingredients and whether I have them in the pantry. Like most people we add a new recipe once in a while in an attempt to provide some variety.

I have taken this to the next step in my strategy. I cook some of these recipes in large quantities and store them in amounts that approximate one meal. When we are very busy or I just don’t want to cook I put together a healthy meal from the freezer or pantry in a very short period of time.

This is a pan of Taco meat that everyone likes to eat in one of several recipes. I overestimated the amount the pan could comfortably cook. There is an article about “6 pounds of Taco meat in a pan that was designed to hold 5 pounds”.

Kids in the Kitchen

My kids generation will are projected not to live as long as their parents. This means the average life span will start to reduce, which is the first time in HISTORY. The primary cause is unhealthy eating habits. If a child doesn’t learn to cook and eat healthy at home where do they learn? Not at school! You can start your kids at an early age, get a stool and teach them how to measure out 2 tbsp of liquid detergent. They start to learn measurements and chemistry if you choose to talk about how the soap changes the water. You can also start to teach them about clean up. One idea is to take two different bowls that have had oatmeal (or ice cream) leftovers in, rinse one immediately and let the other sit overnight. Let them clean it the next day. This is a lifelong lesson if repeated a couple of times.

Grady doing dishes

This section will help give ideas on how you can teach kids about cooking and healthy eating. Doing dishes or stirring chocolate is quality time with your little one. It is also when they start to learn how to be involved in the kitchen. I provide stools for all kids who will do dishes in my home. Grady is an exceptional young man. His mother is very close (right behind the camera). You have to be vigilant when you have kids in the kitchen helping.
